Twin Cities, Minnesota Blog

NOTE: This is an archive of a blog that was originally published at TwinCitiesMinnesotaBlog.com.

On August 10, 2004, I started this blog using Blogger so I could learn about and experiment with the medium.

I've accomplished that goal but I continue to experiment, which might explain the sometimes random nature of this blog. While I publish other blogs on Internet Marketing and the Minnesota Vikings, this one is far less focused and sometimes scatter shot.

I do talk a lot about sports because sports are always fun to talk about. I talk about various places in the Twin Cities because the Twin Cities are a wonderful place to live. I talk about video games because they're very cool, as entertainment as well as technology. I talk about politics because I'm a news and politics junkie.

And I'll pretty much talk about whatever makes it into my head, through my fingers, and past the post button.

I write because it helps me to think; the process helps me clarify my ideas by putting those ideas into words that I can see and examine.  I write because I love writing and I'm good at it and there's nothing quite as wonderful as exercising a skill at which you excel.

Why Tim Russert Sucks

October 31, 2004

There are so many reasons why Meet the Press host Tim Russert sucks; this is merely the most recent: This Sunday Russert had former New York City Mayor Rudolph Giuliani. As the mayor of New York City, Giuliani was by necessity and in fact, a liberal Republican. Sadly, he has since turned sharply partisan and…

Sidekick II Arrives

October 29, 2004

So I finally got my Sidekick II. It arrived, I plugged it in to charge it. I slipped my SIM card in…a n d….it had to activate. No problem, I guess. I could wait the hour or two I was told it would take to activate when I ordered it. But then two hors turned…

Rep. Mark Kennedy Vs. Patty Wetterling

October 21, 2004

I’ve got two pieces on the Kennedy/Wetterling race in Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District at my Minnesota politics site: Running Against A Symbol discusses how hard it is for Representative Mark Kennedy to run against Patty Wetterling when you consider that she is the perfect cultural fit for this moment in American history, when a parent’s…

Gerhard Weinberg & The Secret Dialogue Of Footnotes

October 19, 2004

I’m one of those geeks who reads books with two bookmarks. Not always, but I’ll decide whether I need two bookmarks when I start a new non-fiction book by scanning the footnotes section. I read footnotes. There, I said it. I have one bookmark to mark the page I’m currently reading and the other to…

An Early Halloween For Senator Mark Dayton

October 15, 2004

Senator Mark Dayton continued to explain himself on Friday on Minnesota Public Radio’s Midday program, where he took calls and defended his decision to close his office due to potential terrorist attack. My first reaction to the news that Dayton would close his DC office, was that he had just provided supporting evidence for those…

Cast–T

October 13, 2004

T is our quarterback on our league teams. He can throw an absolute bullet with a tight spiral that will take your hands off and he can dissect defenses with the best of them. But he’s also got some shake and bake to him, so if he takes off running he can make people look…

Cast–Open Source

October 12, 2004

Open Source is called that because of her enthusiasm for often arcane open source technology. Linux, ogg, bit torrent, whatever. If it’s free technology and difficult to use, she’s probably all for it. Open Source plays on our co-ed league football teams. She’s a tall and very athletic woman and that’s great for us because…

Cast–Chef

October 11, 2004

Chef is The Veteran‘s cousin and is indeed a chef. He’s an ordinary, down-to-earth kind of guy who is usually the focal point of any room in which he happens to find himself. He is at ease with himself and, as a reult, is at ease with others. He likes to have a good time…

Cast–Fearful Flyer

October 10, 2004

Fearful Flier is The Veteran‘s cousin and sister to Chef. She is not a librarian though she went to school to become one and as a result, is the first person to turn to when you need to track down an elusive fact or piece of knowledge. The fact that she has a command of…

Cast–Surfer Dude

October 9, 2004

Surfer Dude, not surprisingly, is from California. It is not for that reason alone that I call him Surfer Dude: He actually does surf. He’s also a talented photographer–and videographer–and happily makes his own video highlight reels of his surfing, something I’d love to be able to do for my football games. I met him…
