Jazz Sunday: Strange Fruit by Billie Holiday

Rare video footage of Billie Holiday singing Strange Fruit, a song about lynching. This is one of my absolute favorite songs because of its emotional power and historical significance. That, and the fact that Billie Holiday is one of my favorite singers. Found at YouTube from MonsieurBaudelaire.

Strange Fruit is a musical adaptation of poem written by Abel Meeropol, possibly in response to seeing Lawrence Beitler‘s photograph of the lynching of Thomas Shipp and Abram Smith in Marion, Indiana.
