The Vikings signed linebacker Cameron Smith from the practice squad on October 12 and released wide receiver Davion Davis.

Prior to being elevated to the 53-man roster, Smith (6-2, 235) spent the first five weeks of the season on the team’s practice squad after being waived during final cuts.

Originally selected by Minnesota in the fifth round (162nd overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Granite Bay, California, native was named USC’s team MVP following his senior season in 2018.

Smith led the Trojans in tackles as a sophomore, junior and senior, becoming the first USC player to do so in three consecutive seasons since Dennis Johnson did so from 1977-1979.

Update: According to the Pioneer Press, on October 15 the Vikings waived defensive end Tashawn Bower, who had been on the non-football injury list. Bower tore his Achilles tendon during an offseason workout.

According to NFL rules, the non-football injury list keeps a player who has been placed on the list at the start of the season from practicing or playing with the team for the first six weeks.

Bower is now eligible to be removed from the list but the Vikings have plenty of depth at defensive end. Too bad. I always thought he was another hidden gem the Vikings unearthed.

The team also brought back wide receiver Davion Davis to fill a spot on the practice squad.
